SAMBA Policy
Version 2 - 2006 August 31
Samba is a software suite for use on computers running the Unix ®
operating system to provide file and print services to SMB/CIFS clients.
The most common use of Samba is to allow Unix ® machines to serve and
receive files from computers running Windows NT.
Technology Infrastructure Services (TIS) does not support the Samba software package, nor does it currently
offer complete configuration instructions, however, configuration guides for
specific points required by this policy are provided by TIS. See the
links later in this document for those configuration guidelines.
The following items MUST be adhered to by any computer
running the Samba suite of programs:
- Samba
implementations prior to 2.2 are not
permitted on the Case network.
- Computers running the Samba suite are required to also use the
TIS WINS servers for name registration and resolution.
- Computers running Samba may NOT be configured as a WINS
server, or run proxy services for a WINS server.
- Students are NOT permitted to run Samba Domain Controllers without first getting approval from TIS. Contact server-engr@case.edu to obtain the necessary approval.
- Computers running Samba as a Domain Controller MUST be configured as NT 4.0 Domain
Controllers only. Samba servers may NOT be configured as AD Domain Controllers.
- Computers running Samba may NOT increase their Master Browser
status while a member of a Domain unless they are the PDC of that Domain.
- Computers running Samba may NOT increase their Master Browser
status while a member of a Workgroup without first getting approval from
TIS. Contact
server-engr@case.edu to obtain the necessary approval.
