Personal E-mail Aliases Policy
Version: 1.0.1
Created: 2000 September 26
Revised: 2004 March 1
Currently, every student, staff member, and
faculty member of Case Western Reserve University is assigned
a Case network ID which is also a Case e-mail address.
For example, Albert Crumb could have a Case network ID of axc185
and an e-mail address of axc185@case.edu.
It is now possible to have up to 5 personal e-mail aliases pointing to
your Case e-mail address. For example, if Albert's
nickname is "Smitty", he could have an alias of "Smitty". This alias would
be the e-mail address "smitty@case.edu" and any e-mail sent to that address
will end up in his e-mail box.
This service is available to current Case faculty, staff, and students
only. When an individual leaves the University, his or her participation
in this service will be terminated.
Rules for personal e-mail alias selection
Personal e-mail aliases are assigned on strictly a first-come, first-served
basis. Note that the alias system is NOT case-sensitive. While any alias
you choose will be converted to lowercase, e-mail sent to a mixed upper and
lowercase alias will still get to the right place. In the example above,
"Smitty" is converted to "smitty" but sending e-mail to
"Smitty@case.edu" and "smitty@case.edu" will result in the mail going
to Albert Crumb's Case mailbox.
Aliases must be between 1-80 characters.
Only lowercase letters (a-z), digits (0-9), and hyphens (-)
are allowable characters. All uppercase letters (A-Z) will be converted
to lowercase letters (a-z).
The following aliases are not available for assignment:
- Those aliases reserved by Information Technology Services for administrative use
such as postmaster or aliases used by the University Administration
e.g. president.
- Any name that could collide with Case network IDs format.
In other words, any name consisting of 3 characters optionally followed
by a number e.g. abc or def12.
In addition, ITS maintains a list of aliases that may not be assigned.
Resolution of disputes
When two or more people want the same alias, they are strongly
encouraged to negotiate with one another to reach a mutually
agreeable result. Information Technology Services does not adjudicate alias
disputes.
All University policies apply
You are expected to exercise good judgement and maturity when
considering an alias that might be offensive. All aliases
chosen must comply with all University policies, including all
ethics policies. The standard University disciplinary processes
for students, faculty, and staff apply.
This policy may be changed at any time, as needed.
