NetBIOS
Version 1 - 1998 April 29
NetBIOS use on the Case network is permitted, subject to the following requirements:
Configuration
- To provide for possible future network configuration changes,
NetBIOS-over-TCP is the standard NetBIOS encapsulation for the Case network.
Other encapsulations, such as NetBIOS-over-IPX and NetBEUI, are
not allowed.
- To keep broadcast packets to a reasonable level, computers on
the Case network must not be configured for more than one NetBIOS
encapsulation.
- All computers using NetBIOS must use the Case network WINS servers for
name registration and resolution. NetBIOS implementations incapable
of using WINS are not permitted on the Case network.
- To prevent undue consumption of network bandwidth, WINS servers
other than those currently operated by Technology Infrastructure Services are not permitted on the Case network.
Names
- The names of a given computer in NetBIOS, Novell (if applicable),
and the campus Domain Name Servers must be the same, and must be the
name that is registered with Technology Infrastructure Services. In the event of a
conflict in NetBIOS names, any computer that is using an unregistered
or incorrect name may be disconnected from the network.
- See the Hostname Policy for
more information on selecting a name for a computer.
